I blame much of this mess on the 1996 Telecommunications Act, which created gigantic corporate entities that act in a oligarchal manner. Particularly egregious is Clear Channel, known as iHeart Media since 2013. Clear Channel's hammerlock control of FM music stations after 1997 pretty much gave it near-monopoly power of what music could be heard on radio stations. I mean, look at how both Madonna and the (then) Dixie Chicks effectively had their careers seriously affected when Clear Channel banned both of these acts from their radio stations in 2003. And even the rise of Spotify in 2011 and Apple Music in 2015 hasn't really changed things that much. We need to go back to the pre-1996, now with media companies limited to 50 AM, 50 FM and 50 television stations per company. Breaking up the gigantic media companies would tremendously foster competition, and that will result in a lot more music types being heard on radio again.
